Step 1: Understand What Private University Actually Requires
Unlike federal universities where JAMB UTME scores are the primary filter, private universities in Nigeria have more flexible and holistic admission processes. Most require:
- A minimum UTME score (usually 140–180 depending on the school and course)
- Five O'Level credits including English and Mathematics (for most courses)
- A Post-UTME or entrance screening (some schools have waived this)
- An application form completed on the university's official portal
- Acceptance of the admission offer and payment of acceptance fees
Important: Direct Entry (DE) is available for students with A-Level, ND, or NCE qualifications. This is often overlooked but allows entry into 200 Level, saving one full year of tuition.
Step 2: Choosing the Right University

The National Universities Commission (NUC) maintains an official list of all approved universities and their accredited programmes. Before paying any application fee to any university, verify:
- That the university is on the NUC approved list at nuc.edu.ng
- That the specific course your child wants is NUC-accredited at that institution
- That the university is not under any suspension or sanction
Caveout tip: Accreditation status can change. A programme that was accredited last year may be under interim status this year. Always verify directly on the NUC portal — do not rely on what agents or even the university's own website says.
Step 4: Apply Through Official Channels Only
This is where most families run into trouble. The application process should go like this:
- Visit the university's official website directly (not a link from WhatsApp)
- Create an account on their admissions portal
- Complete the application form online
- Pay the application fee directly on the university portal (not to any individual)
- Submit your documents as instructed
- Attend any screening or interview as scheduled

- Anyone asking you to pay application or admission fees into a personal bank account
- Agents claiming they can "secure" admission without going through the official process
- WhatsApp groups claiming to have "special slots" at popular universities
- Admission letters sent before the university's official admission list is released
- Fees that don't match what the university publishes on its official website
Step 5: After Admission — What Happens Next
Getting the admission letter is not the end — it's the beginning of a new set of tasks that many families are unprepared for:
- Acceptance of offer and payment of acceptance fee (usually non-refundable)
- School fees payment and receipt documentation
- Medical examination and clearance
- Course registration and timetable
- Hostel application (if applicable)
- Student ID card processing
- Matriculation and orientation
