In 2025, JAMB spokesperson Dr Fabian Benjamin confirmed that five ringleaders had confessed in a fake-admission-letter syndicate that flagged over 17,000 candidates — now being prosecuted at the Federal High Court in Abuja. These were not unsophisticated scams. The letters looked real. The portals looked official. Parents paid. And their children lost a full academic year.
Every admission season, this story repeats itself at varying scales across Nigeria. This guide tells you exactly how to protect your family.
How Admission Scams Actually Work
Understanding the mechanics of these scams is the first line of defence. Most admission fraud in Nigeria follows one of three patterns:
Pattern 1 — The "Slot" Agent: An individual (often with some connection to a real university employee) claims to have "slots" or "spaces" available at a popular university. They ask for payment upfront — often in cash or to a personal account — promising to secure the admission. They may deliver a convincing-looking admission letter. The student attempts to resume and finds they are not on any official list.
Pattern 2 — The Fake Portal: A website that looks identical to a university's official admissions portal collects both money and personal data. Payments are made, forms are completed, and a confirmation email arrives — from a domain that differs by one letter from the real university's address.
Pattern 3 — The JAMB CAPS Manipulation Claim: Fraudsters claim they can manipulate your child's JAMB CAPS profile to show an admission offer from a target institution. They charge large sums. JAMB has repeatedly stated this is impossible — CAPS entries are controlled only by the university and by JAMB directly.
The Red Flags — Stop Immediately If You See These
🚩 Warning Signs
- Any agent claiming to "guarantee" admission before the official admission process is complete
- Requests for payment into a personal bank account rather than the university's official account
- Admission letters sent before the university's official admission list is published on JAMB CAPS
- WhatsApp groups or Telegram channels offering "direct admission" into popular programmes
- Fees that don't match the figure published on the university's official website
- Urgency pressure — "pay within 24 hours or the slot is gone"
- An admission letter that cannot be verified by calling the university's admissions office directly
- Anyone asking you to keep the arrangement confidential from the university
How to Verify Any Admission Offer
Before paying any acceptance fee — whether you processed the admission yourself or through an agent — complete all four of these verification steps:
Check JAMB CAPS directly
Visit jamb.gov.ng and log into the student's JAMB profile. Navigate to CAPS (Central Admissions Processing System). A genuine admission offer will appear here with the university's name, course, and admission status. If it's not on CAPS, it is not a real admission.
Call the university's admissions office directly
Find the official phone number on the university's verified website (not from the agent, not from a WhatsApp message). Call and confirm: is [student name] on the admission list for [course] in the 2026/2027 session?
Verify the admission letter reference number
Every genuine admission letter has a reference or application number that can be verified on the university's official portal. Enter this number on the university's website — it should match the student's details exactly.
Confirm the payment account
School fees and acceptance fees should be paid through Remita or directly into the university's official account. The account name should exactly match the university's legal name. Any other payment destination is a scam.

What to Do If You've Been Scammed
If you believe you have already paid money to a fraudulent agent or for a fake admission, take these steps immediately:
- Report to the nearest police station and obtain a report number
- Report directly to JAMB through their official channels at jamb.gov.ng
- Contact your bank immediately if payment was made by transfer — some banks can initiate a recall within 24–48 hours
- Do not make any further payments to the same individual or organisation
- Do not destroy any evidence — keep all messages, receipts and documents
