Abuja Private Universities Compared: Nile, Baze, Veritas, Prime, Philomath, Bingham, Cosmopolitan & Margaret Lawrence — 2026/2027 Guide

The question "which university?" is one of the most consequential decisions a Nigerian family makes — and in Abuja, there are now more options than most parents realise. Eight private universities are either located in Abuja or close enough to Abuja that they are genuinely on the table for FCT families. The differences between them in fees, admission requirements, faculty strength, and overall experience are substantial.

This guide covers all eight, with verified fees, honest assessments, and a clear framework for choosing. We have no commercial arrangement that favours any institution. Our only interest is helping your family make the right call.

Nile is Abuja's oldest and most established private university, and in most respects its most ambitious. As a member of Honoris United Universities — the largest pan-African higher education network, spanning institutions across Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, South Africa, and others — Nile offers something no other Abuja private university currently does: genuine international academic connectivity and student exchange opportunities.

It is also Abuja's most expensive private university by a significant margin. Medicine & Surgery for new enrolments in 2026/2027 comes in at ₦7,150,000 per session — that is seven million, one hundred and fifty thousand naira per year, before accommodation. Families considering Nile for Medicine need to budget realistically: over a six-year programme, tuition alone could exceed ₦42 million.

The programmes that drive the most competition and the most enquiries at Nile are Medicine & Surgery, Law, Computer Science, Cyber Security, and Engineering. These are also, not coincidentally, the programmes with the highest fees.

In May 2025, Nile's MBBS programme received a significant international recognition: the UK General Medical Council (GMC) confirmed that the degree meets its standards as an acceptable overseas qualification. This means Nile MBBS graduates can proceed directly to the PLAB process and register to practice medicine in the UK without individual qualification assessments — a pathway that also opens eligibility for medical practice in the US (via ECFMG) and Canada. Nile's College of Health Sciences has also been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. For a family investing ₦7.15M per session in Medicine, this international portability is a significant return on that investment.

On admission, there is no application fee to apply to Nile University. Admission is processed through the screening portal at screening.nileuniversity.edu.ng.

Students who score JAMB 275 receive 10% off tuition; JAMB 300 gets 20%; JAMB 320 gets 30%. Students with both a JAMB score of 350 or above and 5 A1 grades in WAEC or NECO are eligible for a full 100% scholarship. One important caveat: Law and Medicine are explicitly excluded from the scholarship scheme. Sports scholarships (100% coverage) are also available for national or professional athletes who commit to representing Nile, excluding medical students. Sibling discounts apply on a sliding scale — 5% for two enrolled children, rising to 20% for five or more — but apply only to newly enrolling siblings, must be applied for, and are not automatic.

Prime University is one of Abuja's newest private universities, having held its 2nd Matriculation Ceremony in May 2026. It was established in 2023 by the consortium behind Capital Science Academy and Nigeria-Ghana International College — two established secondary school operators in Abuja — and its tagline, "Incubating the Future," signals a deliberate emphasis on technology, innovation, and career readiness.

What makes Prime immediately interesting to families is the fee structure. Its two-campus model creates a price differential worth understanding: programmes at the Kuje main campus are noticeably cheaper than the same courses at the Life Camp city campus. A family's budget and location preference can genuinely influence which campus makes more sense.

Prime has also made a strong commitment to Law — offering both LL.B Civil Law and LL.B Sharia & Civil Law — at fees significantly below what Nile charges. At ₦3.5M per session on the Kuje campus, Prime's Law is a serious option for families who want a reputable Abuja Law degree without the ₦4.55M Nile price tag. Its Allied Health Sciences faculty covers Nursing Science and Public Health.

There is no application fee to apply to Prime University. Applications are submitted through the official portal at primeuniversity.edu.ng/admission.

The Sciences & Computing faculty at Prime is clearly designed to attract the technology-driven generation. Computer Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, and Data Science are all available, with Kuje campus fees of ₦1.8M/session — making Prime one of the most affordable places in Abuja to study computing. The Management & Social Sciences faculty is broadly comprehensive, offering Actuarial Science alongside the more standard offerings of Accounting, Business Administration, and International Relations.

Philomath University was licensed by the NUC on 8th April 2021, making it the older of the two newer institutions in this comparison. In its five years of operation it has built a growing reputation — winning Best Private University at the 2024 SEAL Awards — and taken a deliberate approach of keeping fees competitive while investing in two distinct campuses: a quiet, residential main campus in Kuje and a central city campus in Maitama, one of Abuja's most accessible and prestigious neighbourhoods.

One of Philomath's most distinctive policies is its free application form — there is no form fee and no charge for campus visits. For a family comparing multiple universities, this matters. It also offers tuition discounts of 20–40% for eligible students, and first-year students who apply early are guaranteed on-campus accommodation — a practical advantage that reduces one of the biggest stresses of first-year university life.

Philomath's Law programme at ₦2,400,000/session is the cheapest accredited Law degree in Abuja among the four universities covered here. With a 20% early-application discount, an eligible student could study Law at Philomath for as little as ₦1,920,000/session. That is a meaningful difference for families making a multi-year financial commitment.

The university currently offers six faculties and does not offer Medicine or Engineering — so families specifically targeting those should look elsewhere. Its JAMB minimum cutoff is 140 for all departments. It does conduct Post-UTME screening.

Cosmopolitan University Abuja occupies a genuinely distinctive location: directly opposite the National Hospital in the Central Business District. For students interested in Health Sciences — or indeed any student who wants to be at the heart of Abuja's government, diplomatic, and business activity — this is a meaningful advantage that no other private university in Abuja currently offers.

Approved by the Federal Executive Council on 16th May 2023, Cosmopolitan is the most recently established of the four universities in this comparison. Its fee range is reported as ₦1.5M–₦6.5M/session, with the higher end reflecting Health Sciences and clinical programmes. The university also accepts payment in US dollars, which can be convenient for diaspora families or those with dollar-denominated income.

The JAMB minimum cutoff at Cosmopolitan is 140 for all departments. It conducts Post-UTME screening. The university's Central Business District location means easy access to government ministries, international organisations, and corporate Abuja — a real advantage for students in public administration, international relations, economics, or health-related fields.

Baze University sits on a 50,000 sqm campus on Jabi Airport Road and was established in 2011 with an explicit mission to provide education to British standards "at about half the cost of studying abroad." It is Abuja's second oldest private university after Nile and one of the most comprehensively accredited private institutions in Nigeria.

In October/November 2025, Baze completed a NUC comprehensive accreditation exercise — all presented programmes received full accreditation. The university now holds full accreditation across nine professional regulatory bodies covering Engineering, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Architecture, Radiography, and Estate Management. A confirmed ACCA partnership (since 2017) integrates the professional Accounting curriculum, giving Accounting students a structured pathway to the ACCA qualification. Baze appears in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Medicine fees at Baze are structured progressively by level — cheaper in early years and rising with clinical training. At Levels 400–600, Medicine costs approximately ₦5,150,000 per session. The JAMB cutoff is 180 for most programmes. There is no prominent application fee — verify at bazeuniversity.edu.ng.

Veritas University is the Catholic University of Nigeria, established by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria and admitted its first students in 2008. Its campus is in Bwari — roughly 45 minutes from central Abuja in a quieter, greener setting. The university combines academic rigour with values-based formation. It is inclusive — admission is not restricted by religion.

Its most striking feature for most families is the fee structure. For the vast majority of undergraduate programmes, Veritas charges between ₦670,000 and ₦1,786,000 per session — the most affordable among the private universities in this comparison for non-Medicine courses. Accommodation is compulsory for undergraduates and charged separately. International students pay in US dollars.

Bingham University was formally licensed by the NUC in January 2005 — making it older than Nile, Baze, and most other institutions in this comparison. Founded by the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) and later expanded under COCIN, it sits in Karu, Nasarawa State, 26km from Abuja on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway. It is not within the FCT, but is well within commuting or relocation distance for many Abuja families.

Bingham's defining feature is affordability. Management and Social Sciences cost approximately ₦770,000 per session. Medicine is ₦2,980,000 for new students — the lowest Medicine fee among all universities in this comparison. Law is ₦2,120,000. These are substantial, compounding differences over a 4–6 year programme. Bingham operates 12 faculties with 64 programmes, is fully NUC-accredited, and is not subject to ASUU strikes.

Margaret Lawrence University operates two campuses: its Abuja campus is in Lugbe (River Park Estate, Airport Road) within the FCT; its main campus is in Delta State. The Abuja campus offers Health Sciences, Computing, Law, and Management & Social Sciences. Engineering is at the Delta campus. MLU held its Third Matriculation in March 2026, making it one of the newest institutions in this comparison.

MLU publishes one of the most transparent fee schedules of any Nigerian private university — full itemised tables for every programme, both campuses, and student categories are available at mlugalilee.edu.ng/fees. The fees place MLU at the premium end: Medicine is ₦6,500,000 tuition at the Abuja campus (comparable to Nile), and Law at ₦5,000,000 tuition is the highest Law fee in this entire comparison. Computing is ₦3,000,000 — in line with Nile. Management & Social Sciences is ₦2,500,000 per session.
